Now more than ever people need peace & tranquility...
As we all recognize how moments spent in nature can be very good for us and the value of unplugging, we aim to offer our guests more than just a retreat; we deliver great food, tranquility, and unforgettable memories.
About Us
Over a century ago, our family discovered this remarkable property. Three decades ago, we unveiled Canoe Bay to the world, nestled in the heart of the Midwest—a tranquil sanctuary crafted exclusively for couples, set within a 300-acre preserve featuring pristine, glacially carved lakes.
Canoe Bay quickly gained recognition for its exceptional architecture and design, ultimately earning the prestigious title of America's finest accommodations by ZAGAT's discerning survey.
From the start, we understood—and continue to cherish—the profound benefits of "unplugging" and immersing oneself in the beauty of nature. At Canoe Bay, couples find a refuge from the chaos of modern life, where they can pause, float peacefully on the lake, wander along the trails, and reconnect with what truly matters: each other.
We invite you to embrace simplicity, deepen connections, and find rejuvenation in this little piece of heaven. While the world is filled with beautiful places, there is only one Canoe Bay, and we welcome you to experience its unique charm.
As we celebrate 30 years since Canoe Bay's inception, we reflect on how far we've come. We never imagined it would grow into an international destination, earning countless awards and accolades. We are truly humbled and deeply grateful to all the guests who have come to know and love Canoe Bay.

Sustainability
We are deeply committed to preserving the beauty and integrity of Canoe Bay's natural environment for generations to come. Our sustainability efforts include maintaining organic gardens that reduce the carbon footprint by minimizing food transport, and pollinator-friendly practices that support local ecosystems by cultivating diverse plants. We also focus on prairie restoration to enhance biodiversity, reintroducing native species that create resilient ecosystems capable of withstanding environmental stresses.
Situated on a 300-acre preserve, Canoe Bay protects local wildlife, offering a sanctuary where species can thrive undisturbed. Mindful of this, we use thoughtful building design that includes sustainable materials and practices that minimize environmental impact, respecting and preserving the natural landscape. We delight in strengthening the place and the people who visit.

Organic Garden
Our organic garden is a reflection of hard work and deep pleasure...it is a magical place that produces unforgettable flavors and beyond amazing beauty.
The garden is a haven for pollinators and a source of delicious organic produce. Spread across 3-acres, it offers an abundance of vegetables, fruits, and flowers that create a harmonious environment where pollinators flourish. Stroll along pebble stone walkways adorned with vibrant colors, and if you look closely, you might catch a bumblebee or monarch butterfly resting on a blossom.
Master Gardener John collaborates closely with the Chef to create a symphony of extraordinary produce for our kitchen. Savor the fresh, organic goodness in every bite, knowing it’s all grown right here on-site. From kale to tomatoes, broccoli to asparagus, the flavors from our garden are unmatched. Guests often tell us they crave Canoe Bay's salads and herbs long after they’ve left—it’s one of the many reasons they return.
Beyond the food, the simple experience of strolling through the garden in summer and fall is something truly special. Let yourself be inspired and breathe in the tranquility that surrounds you.
300-Acre Forest
The forest at Canoe Bay offers beautiful seclusion, peace, and is home to abundant wildlife.
Multiple life forms in an ecosystem promote an overall healthy biodiversity. We understand trees are crucial and provide a balance of oxygen and carbon.
While taking a stroll you'll often see deer roaming about, birds singing, and squirrels scurrying.
Canoe Bay truly takes pride in being a refuge to nature left in peace while explored, understood, and admired.

Prairie Restoration
Controlled burns bring back vegetation and flowers stronger than before. Prairie restoration efforts have significantly been improving our grounds for years. When a burning occurs it naturally nitrogen fixes the soil and promotes healthy growth of our native plants. Not to mention, prairies absorb abundant amounts of rain which reduces erosion and run off.
